rcbench panel help
The panel of the rcbench test bench, screen by screen: what each screen shows and what it lets the user do. The screenshots are rendered by the panel's own drawing code.
- Menu
The menu is the panel's home screen. It opens after the splash and holds one tile per bench screen. A tap on a tile opens its screen. The home tag at the top left of every other screen climbs one level: from a screen the menu opens it returns here, from a list or screen that SETUP's tiles open it returns to the tiles.
- Status band and STOP
The status band is the top 60px of every screen except the splash, the bus-fault screen, PANEL UPDATE and the progress of an IOmcu update. It names the screen, shows the state of the bench and holds STOP.
- Motor and ESC
MOTOR & ESC drives an ESC (electronic speed controller) and records a run: voltage, current, power and rpm over time. It opens from the MOTOR & ESC tile on the menu, always on LIVE.
- Motor settings
SETTINGS, the third tab of MOTOR & ESC's strip, holds the bench's 8 ESC (electronic speed controller) settings in the left column under three headings, in two columns: PACK and MOTOR on the left, THROTTLE OUTPUT on the right. The right column stays in place and works: the readouts, TARGET, ARM, the totals and RESET PEAKS.
- ESC STICK
ESC STICK sets an ESC (electronic speed controller) through its throttle-stick menu. The bench powers the ESC from the PD mini supply, moves the throttle to the positions the ESC profile names, and counts the menu's beeps as pulses in the supply current. It opens from the row
ESCs by throttle stickon MOTOR & ESC's PROGRAM, full width under the output strip. - Servo
SERVO drives a servo, measures its current on the servo rail, runs an automatic test across supply voltages and searches the travel limits of the installed servo. It opens from the SERVO tile on the menu, on LIVE.
- Servo settings
SETTINGS, the third tab of SERVO's strip, shows the servo's settings in the page area on three pages: OUTPUT, SWEEP and DUT (device under test). Each run's own settings open from its card on TEST: the card's SETTINGS shows them as a list one level down, and CLOSE at the list's top right or the home tag goes back to the cards. The output card on the right stays in place and works. A value opens the keypad, a list opens a list, a switch flips on the tap, and NAME opens a keyboard.
- Servo programmer
The servo programmer reads the 32 registers of a KST or Chaservo servo over its signal wire, shows them as settings and writes changed settings back. The servos of the two brands share one protocol and one register set. On SERVO, PROGRAM in the strip lists the programmers. The row
KST and Chaservo servosopens this one over the left column, the strip's tabs with it, one level down; CLOSE or the home tag returns to the list. Opening it ends a running automatic test. - Supply
SUPPLY sets, switches and records a programmable supply: the PD mini, a USB-PD (USB Power Delivery) trigger that the IOmcu drives over a UART (universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter) on two of its pins. It opens from the SUPPLY tile on the menu, always on LIVE.
- Receiver
RECEIVER shows what a receiver sends on an S.BUS line: sixteen channels with their history, the two digital channels, the frame rate and the decoder's counters. It opens from the RECEIVER tile on the menu. The tile carries the SIMULATED mark in this release.
- Logs
LOGS reads the panel's SD (Secure Digital) card: it lists the CSV (comma-separated values) files of one folder and its reports, shows what the import found in a CSV file, plots up to 4 of its columns, and shows a report as text. Three tabs at the top left choose the folder, in this order: ROOT (the card's root), USER (User log folder,
USER/LOGSby default) and BENCH (Auto log folder,BENCH/LOGSby default). It opens from the LOGS tile on the menu. WI-FI, at the bottom left, opens Wi-Fi, and FILES beside it opens Files: copy, move, rename and delete on the card. The home tag climbs one level, as BACK does: the plot to the import view, the import view and a report's text to the file list, the file list to the menu. Over the DELETE question it is CANCEL. - Wi-Fi
WI-FI runs the panel's Wi-Fi for two jobs in a browser: every file on the SD (Secure Digital) card to download, and a panel firmware image to upload. It opens from the WI-FI tile on SETUP and from WI-FI in the bottom row of LOGS. Its home tag returns to the screen that opened it. Over the network list or a keyboard it climbs one level first, as CANCEL does: from a keyboard to the list, keeping nothing typed, and from the list to the buttons. Over the question about an uploaded image it is CANCEL: the image is dropped and the screen stays; a second tap while the image is still there leaves. The radio runs only while this screen is open. It is off at every start of the panel.
- Panel update
PANEL UPDATE writes a new panel firmware image into the panel's flash. It opens after the 2s hold on INSTALL on Wi-Fi, or when a download from Updates has passed its checks, and it takes the whole screen: no band and no STOP. Nothing can be switched to ARMED behind it.
- Files
FILES shows the SD (Secure Digital) card in two panes. It copies, moves, renames and deletes files, and makes folders and empty text files. It opens from FILES at the bottom of LOGS and from the FILES tile on SETUP. The home tag closes a box or the keyboard first, then leads back to the screen that opened FILES. FILES drives no output.
- Setup
SETUP holds the panel's bench-wide settings in four categories: PANEL, INTERFACES, SD CARD and SENSORS. The ESC (electronic speed controller) settings are on MOTOR & ESC, SETTINGS. It opens from the SETUP tile on the menu on a page of tiles, 3 by 3. A category's tile opens its list across the screen's width.
- Interfaces
INTERFACES, the second category on SETUP, wires the parts the IOmcu reads: the INA228 current monitor and an output encoder on one I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) bus, the phase tap, the PD mini supply, and how the programming port receives a Hitec D series servo. Its 23 settings stand in five sections under the headings I2C BUS, PHASE TAP, BALANCE SENSORS, SUPPLY and PROG PORT; a heading is a row of its own with no keys. The settings are kept and saved like every other setting on SETUP. The panel writes each set-up to the IOmcu 500ms after the last edit, and only what differs from what the IOmcu holds.
- Outputs
OUTPUTS binds the IOmcu's pins to output protocols: which pins drive servos, which drive ESCs (electronic speed controllers), and with what signal. It opens from OUTPUTS on SETUP on the overview: OFF selected and every bound pin named by its protocol. From TARGET on MOTOR & ESC it opens on the protocol the throttle's pins are bound as (the overview while they are bound as several or none is known), and from TARGET on SERVO on what that row shows: the PROG PORT entry while the IOmcu drives the port, SERVO PWM while it drives the outputs, the overview while the target is not known. The home tag goes back to the screen it opened from; over the open protocol list it closes the list first, choosing nothing. The protocol list and LAST WRITE take the left column; the IOmcu's pins take the right. PICK A PIN holds the same binding on a drawing of the board.
- Sensors
SENSORS, the fourth category on SETUP, sets up to four TI INA3221 three-channel current monitors on the sensor bus, at 0x40 to 0x43, and says for each channel what it measures. The INA228 and the bus's pins stay on Interfaces. The settings are kept and saved like every other setting on SETUP.
- Pin picker
PICK A PIN shows the IOmcu board as it lies on the bench and binds a pin by a key on a trace to its pad. It holds the same binding as Outputs: the list answers which GPIO (general-purpose input/output) is bound, the picker where to put the lead. It opens from PICK A PIN on SETUP, and its home tag leads back there; over the open protocol list it closes the list first, choosing nothing. Every visit opens with OFF selected: no key binds or unbinds a pin until a protocol is picked in the list, and the line under the list reads
CHOOSE A PROTOCOL, THEN TAP PINS. - Updates
UPDATES asks GitHub which panel firmware release is the newest and installs it. It opens from the UPDATES key on Setup. A reminder at start asks the same question once per start of the panel. 0.22 is the last release for the ESP32-S3 panel; the ESP32-P4 panel is offered every newer release, see The release line.
- Release reminder
The reminder says that a newer panel firmware release is on GitHub. It opens on the menu after the check at start found one. REMINDER AT START on Updates switches it; it is on by default.
- Battery
BATTERY shows how far each cell of a pack departs from the pack's mean, and gives a verdict on the pack. It opens from the BATTERY tile on the menu. The tile carries the SIMULATED mark in this release.
- Balance
BALANCE finds where a propeller or fan needs mass, and shows where the two sensors go. It opens from the BALANCE tile on the menu. Three tabs: BALANCE, TEST RIG and AIRCRAFT.
- IOmcu update
A panel firmware image carries the IOmcu's image and offers it when the IOmcu runs another build. The check runs at every link-up over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus and compares SHA-256 (Secure Hash Algorithm, 256 bits) digests, not version numbers. A different build raises the alert
IOmcu runs a different build. Update it under SETUP > UPDATES.. - Bus fault
The bus-fault screen says why the panel and the IOmcu do not talk over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. It opens on its own, in two cases: the CAN self-test at start fails, or a link that was up has been gone for 4s. It takes the whole screen: no band and no STOP. The bench cannot switch to ARMED behind it.
